Nasser Hospital: the Complex Fractures Unit performs 407 specialized operations since 2019

“Due to what the Gaza Strip is going through regarding the repeated aggression, which has led to the accumulation of war injuries and deformities. Patients and their families bore the negative consequences for these aggressions, which burdened the Ministry of Health with medical expenses, says Dr. Mahmoud Matar Head of the Complex Fractures Unit at Nasser Hospital.
Dr.Matar added, “to overcome the ministry of health overwhelming, MoH had to have an urgent idea to establish a complex fracture unit that would have the capacity and equipment of high specifications in terms of surgical expertise, medical tools, and consumables to spare patients the hardships of traveling abroad for treatment”.

Dr. Matar explained that the Complex Fracture Unit for limp injuries and deformities was established in November 2019 in the Nasser hospital, in cooperation with the WHO and the MAP Foundation.

MOH in cooperation with partner institutions took the initial action to send some orthopedic surgeons for training in London, as well as sending a nursing team, and physiotherapy teams, in addition to importing specialized delegations for this type of injury to the Gaza Strip to follow up with the local team.

“The local staff is training new doctors from the Palestinian Board campaign, hoping to establish another unit in Gaza Governorate in the future”.

Dr. Matar says, “We seek to increase the number of beds to receive the largest number of patients, pointing out that the unit’s bed capacity is 16 beds until now, and the total number of outpatient clinics reached (2363) patients, at a rate of approximately (100) patients per month”.
This project is considered one of the exceptional projects established by the Ministry of Health, while the strip is yield under the siege.
